When does a cambelt need replacing?
Cambelt intervals are set by both time and mileage, whichever comes first, and they vary by engine rather than by model. That time element catches people out, because a low mileage car can still be overdue on age alone.

What happens if a cambelt fails?
On most modern engines a snapped cambelt causes serious internal damage, because the valves and pistons can no longer stay out of each other way. The repair bill after a failure is usually a significant fraction of what the car is worth. This is the reason cambelt replacement is treated as non negotiable scheduled maintenance rather than something to defer. It is also why we will tell you plainly if yours is overdue.
Why is the water pump replaced with the cambelt?
On most engines the water pump is driven by the cambelt and sits behind the same covers, so the labour to reach it has already been done. Replacing it at the same time costs a fraction of doing it separately later.
If the pump fails after a belt change, the belt usually has to come off again, which means paying most of that labour twice. Doing both together is the sensible call on nearly every engine we see.

Does my engine have a belt or a chain?
It depends entirely on the engine, not the badge. Across the Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Cupra range some engines use a timing belt with a replacement interval, and others use a chain that is designed to last the life of the engine.
Chains are not maintenance free in practice. Tensioners and guides wear, and a rattling chain on start up is worth investigating rather than ignoring. We can tell you which your car has and what condition it is in.
What does a cambelt replacement cost?
The cost depends on the engine, how much has to come off to reach the belt, and whether the water pump and tensioners are being done at the same time. Some engines are straightforward, others need considerably more labour.
