Skoda fault codes and what they cost you if you ignore them
Most Skoda fault codes do not stop the car. That is the problem. The light comes on, the Octavia or Karoq drives more or less normally, and the job gets pushed back a month at a time. Some codes genuinely can wait a couple of weeks. Others are quietly running up a much larger bill while you drive. This article explains how to tell the difference, using two real codes from our Skoda list as examples.
What the light is actually reporting
Your Skoda constantly compares sensor readings against the values its software expects. When something sits outside that range for long enough, the engine control unit stores a diagnostic trouble code and turns on the engine warning light.
The key thing to understand is that the light does not indicate severity. A code logged because a sensor drifted slightly out of tolerance triggers the same amber light as a code logged because the catalytic converter is failing. The car has no way of showing you which one you have got, and neither does a cheap code reader that only gives you the number and a one line description.
That is why the sensible response to a light is a diagnostic check rather than a guess. Reading the code, the freeze frame data stored with it, and the live sensor values together tells you whether you are looking at a minor sensor issue or the early stage of an expensive failure.
Emissions codes are the ones that escalate
Skoda models share the same engines and emissions hardware as the rest of the range, so the codes that come up most often on an Octavia, Superb, Fabia, Karoq or Kodiaq are the emissions related ones. These are also the codes most likely to get worse and more expensive while being ignored.
Skoda fault code P040400 covers the exhaust gas recirculation circuit reporting a range or performance problem. The EGR system feeds a measured amount of exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperatures and cut emissions. Over time, particularly on diesels used mainly for short journeys, the valve and cooler passages carbon up. A partly stuck valve logs a code, and on the way there it usually costs you fuel economy, adds soot loading to the diesel particulate filter and can push the car into reduced power. Cleaned or replaced at the code stage, it is a contained job. Left long enough, it starts pulling the DPF into the repair as well.
Skoda fault code P042200 reports main catalyst efficiency on bank 1 falling below threshold. In plain terms, the engine is comparing the oxygen sensors before and after the catalytic converter and concluding that the converter is not doing enough. Sometimes the converter really has failed. Just as often the cause is upstream: an exhaust leak, a faulty rear oxygen sensor, a misfire, or a mixture problem that has been slowly cooking the catalyst. The reason this matters is cost. A rear sensor is a modest repair. A catalytic converter is not, and repeated misfiring is one of the fastest ways to destroy one.
Sensor and circuit codes are usually cheaper, if caught early
Not every code points at expensive hardware. Plenty relate to sensors, wiring and circuits, and these are the ones where early attention genuinely saves money.
Codes covering intake air temperature, coolant temperature, boost pressure sensors and similar circuits often trace back to a connector, a chafed wire or a sensor that has drifted. On its own the fault might cost you a little economy and some throttle response. The catch is that the engine uses those readings to calculate fuelling and boost, so a sensor reporting inaccurately can drive the engine into a running condition that damages something more expensive over time.
What ignoring the light really costs
There are three practical costs to leaving a Skoda fault code alone. The first is fuel. Mixture, EGR and sensor faults almost always cost economy, and over several months of commuting that adds up quietly.
The second is the repair itself growing. Catalyst and DPF failures are rarely spontaneous. They are usually the end result of a smaller fault that was reported months earlier and never investigated.
The third is the MOT. An engine warning light that is illuminated and indicating a fault is a failure item under current MOT rules, so the job has to be dealt with before the car passes. Why clearing the code is not a fix
A scanner will switch the light off. The engine control unit then reruns its monitors, and if the fault is still there the code comes back, usually within a few days of normal driving.
Clearing also deletes the freeze frame data recorded when the fault was stored, which is often the most useful information available for diagnosis. If the light appears, have the codes read and written down before anything is erased.

How long can I drive my Skoda with the engine warning light on?
If the light is steady and the car is driving normally, you can usually drive it to a garage, but treat it as a job for this week rather than next month. If the light is flashing, stop as soon as it is safe. A flashing light normally means a misfire serious enough to damage the catalytic converter.
Will a Skoda fault code fail the MOT?
The code itself is not tested, but an illuminated engine warning light indicating a fault is a failure item under current MOT rules. If the light is on when the car goes in, expect it to fail.
Is an EGR fault worth repairing on an older Skoda?
Usually yes. An EGR fault left alone tends to increase soot loading and drag the diesel particulate filter into the repair, which is considerably more expensive. Removing or disabling the system is not a legal option on a road car, so cleaning or replacement is the practical route.
